Ramirez wins fifth annual Hermosa Beach 5000

More than 500 runners and walkers participated in the fifth annual Hermosa Beach 5000 5K Saturday, making their way through the 3.1-mile cloverleaf course that included Pier Plaza, The Strand and finishing on the Hermosa Beach Pier.

Former Azusa Pacific distance runner Tim Ramirez outpaced Hermosa Beach’s Rick Weis for the title with a time of 15 minutes, 56 seconds, narrowly missing David Williams’ event record of 15:52 set in 2009.

Ramirez, a 27-year-old resident of Canoga Park, defeated Weis, 33, who won the first two events in 2007-08. Weis finished at 16:25, ahead of John Harrington, 36, of Manhattan Beach who crossed the finish line at 17:16.

In the women’s division, 26-year-old Adrienne Schumm held off Meredith Coulibaly, 31, of Los Angeles for a five-second victory. Schumm, a former distance standout at Cal Poly Pomona, finished at 18:43, ahead of Coulibaly’s time of 18:48 and Debbie Richardson, 48, of Palos Verdes who completed the course in 19:24.

Redondo Beach’s Nathalie Higley was not on hand to defend her two-time championship. Higley broke her own event record last year with a mark of 17:20.

Male runners placing first in their respective age groups were: Nicklas Majamaki (Torrance, 1-10, 21:33), Duncan Reid (Palos Verdes Estates, 11-14, 18:56), Brendon Cohen (Palos Verdes, 15-18, 17:24), Ramirez (19-29), Weis (30-34), Harrington (35-39), Ted Iantuono (Manhattan Beach, 40-44, 18:25), Mark Silva (Manhattan Beach, 45-49, 19:33), Denny Nivens (Hermosa Beach, 50-54, 19:09), Jim Hartig (Avila Beach, 55-59, 19:29), Peter Joyce (Manhattan Beach, 60-64, 22:10), Don Jennings (Manhattan Beach, 65-69, 22:46), Luis Gorordo (Redondo Beach, 70-74, 24:14) and Gustav Woerner (Hermosa Beach, 75-59, 34:54).

Female age divisions winners included: Jenna Wing (Hermosa Beach, 1-10, 25:42), Sierra Andrade (Manhattan Beach, 11-14, 23:23), Schumm (15-29), Coulibaly (30-34), Julie Stewart (Manhattan Beach, 35-39, 22:14), Rosalinda Alcala (Anaheim, 40-44, 21:22), Richardson (45-49), Jodie Greger (El Segundo, 50-54, 25:04), Leslie Cohen (Santa Monica, 55-59, 21:57), Sue Reinhardt (Rancho Palos Verdes, 60-64, 26:12) and Corrine Schratz (Hermosa Beach, 65-69, 35:45).

Winner’s in the Kid’s Races were: Zack Paulson (10, Redondo Beach), Sam Paley (9, Hermosa Beach), Kevin Matsui (8, Hermosa Beach), Alex Mainville (7, city not listed), Ellen Cater (6, city not listed), Tucker Fonoimoana (5, Hermosa Beach), Luke Kershaw (4, Hermosa Beach), Yuzu Bynon (3, Redondo Beach) and Jannessa Martinez (2, Bell Gardens).
